What is a “carnival”?

Carnival is a festive time of the year; these festivities are usually in February,

immediately before Lent.

Carnival is celebrated with parades on the streets; sometimes people wear

costumes and masks; in other countries people splash other people with water,

or maybe paint their faces with oils. Carnival is a good way of entertainment for

the population.

Carnival in different countries:

Venice._ Is an annual festival which is full of colors, masks, costumes, and

music. There are different types of masks like: Bauta, Columbina, The plague

doctor, Moretta, Vortto and lots of ther kinds with different shapes and colors,

the costumes are very colorful and the most of them are handmade.

The Venetian carnival tradition is very famous because of these distinctive

masks.

 

Rio Carnival._ It is a 4 day celebration, it is also known as the “Samba Parade”

it is recognized because of its garotas; Carnival has excesses, it is celebrated

like a profane activity, it gives us a chance to learn about the real Brazilian

culture, this carnival is one of the most big and colorful carnivals around the

world, It provides entertainment for all the people.

It is a result of a hard work and months of preparation. During all the parade you

could listen to different rhythms of samba and Afro – Brazilian music.

 

I have written about big and crowded carnivals around the world, I have

mentioned the two most important carnivals, now I want to tell you about our

carnival.

How people celebrate carnival in Ecuador?

In my country there are different ways to celebrate carnival; in most parts of the

country people used to splash other people with water, but nowadays people

get an conscious environment, because, you know, water is a vital element, and

if we don’t take care of it, someday it could disappear.

Like in other countries we also have parades, we cannot compare them with

the ones I just mentioned. They are smaller and colorful, people also wear

costumes of different types and they dance music from all around the world.

Carnival is a good season to spend time with family and friends, to travel

around your country maybe to learn about different cultures; and if you have

more money and time you could travel to other countries to enjoy the wonders

of our planet, Earth.

If you are going to play Carnival in Ecuador, remember that someday your

children will need that water to drink.

It’s better if you play Carnival with foam or something like that, and remember

you must always enjoy these traditions that we have, and learn about your

own culture, about your history, about your geography, because if you know

who you are and where you are from, I’m sure you are going to be proud to be

Ecuadorian.
